Wildcats Host Tiffin Thursday and #1 Ashland Saturday for Youth Sports Day

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Women's Basketball Team for Northern Michigan University will host Tiffin University and #1 Ashland University this week as the team returns to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.   

NMU will host Tiffin on Thursday at 8 p.m. in a game that can be followed with live stats, video and audio.

The team will then host #1 Ashland on Saturday at 3 p.m. which can also be followed with live stats, video and audio. Saturday's game is hosted by Wells Fargo and is also Youth Sports Day.  Any eighth-grade student or younger who comes to the game wearing their team's jersey or apparel will receive free admission.

Finding their way: The Wildcats enter the week looking to bounce back after dropping their past three matchups, including a loss in double overtime and a missed buzzer-beater.

Impact freshman: Freshman Lexi Smith (St. Germain, Wis./Northland Pines) has led the team in scoring in four of the past seven games, and is now averaging 11.9 points per game.  In conference games, Smith is leading the team with 17.8 points a game, including a career-high 29 points against Grand Valley State University. 

Dominating inside:  Junior Taylor Hodell (Wausau, Wis./DC Everest) and sophomores Erin Honkala (Howell, Mich.) and Jessica Schultz (Mineral Point, Wis.) provide the team three different threats from their post players. Hodell is second on the team with 10.3 points in her four games since returning from an injury.  Schultz is posting 9.8 points per game and also give the team an outside shooting threat as she is shooting 37 % from behind the arc.  Honkala leads the Wildcats with 7.4 rebounds per game, 19 blocks and 23 steals.  She also averages 8.4 points per game. 

Benoit leads the team: In their last outing, sophomore Emma Benoit (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire) posted a career-high 12 points on 5 of 8 shooting.  She is currently tied for the team's lead by shooting 50% from the field. 

Strength in numbers: NMU features ten players averaging over ten minutes per game.  Smith leads the way with 30, while junior Sydney Dillinger (Houghton, Mich.) typically aides the team with 29.8 minutes a game. In addition to Honkala and Schultz, freshman Elizabeth Lutz (Marshall, Wis./Marshall) is giving the team over 20 minutes a game. Hodell, Benoit, juniors Tess Weatherly (Howell, Mich.) and Emily Schramek (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy), and freshman Amber Huebner (Marquette, Mich.) also average double-figure minutes. Redshirt-freshman Terese Ledy (Marquette, Mich.) is averaging just shy of ten minutes in the team's last five games

NMU versus Tiffin: The Wildcats are 9-3 all-time against the Dragons, which includes winning the past four contests.. NMU captured a 69-53 victory in their last matchup. This season, Tiffin enters the week at 4-8 on the year and 1-4 in the GLIAC. 

NMU versus Ashland: Ashland is currently on a 50-game winning streak, which includes an undefeated season and the NCAA Division II National Championship last year.  While NMU holds a 16-15 advantage in the overall series, the Wildcats seek their first win over the Eagles since the 2011-12 season.  In GLIAC play, Ashland is averaging 105.4 points per game while only allowing 58.8. For the season, they are outscoring their opponents by over 37 points a game.
