Women's Basketball Heads to Minnesota for Three Games in Four Days

MARQUETTE, Mich.  --  Northern Michigan's Women's Basketball Team hits the road for three games in four days in Minnesota.

On Thursday, the Wildcats visit Concordia University, St. Paul.  They enjoy a day off Friday before taking on University of Minnesota-Crookston Saturday and Minnesota State University-Moorhead Sunday. 

Thursday's game begins at 8 p.m. EST, and can be followed with video, live stats and audio.

Saturday's contest is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. EST and currently is not providing video or live stats.  Sunday's game at MSU-Moorhead also is not currently providing video or live stats and is schedule to tip-off at 5 p.m. EST. Radio for Saturday and Sunday will also be available.

Opening weekend split:  The Wildcats opened the season 1-1 after splitting two games in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference/Great Lakes Valley Conference Challenge to open the season.  Against the University of Indianapolis Friday, NMU came out with a 59-53 victory behind 20 points ftom junior Jessica Schultz (Mineral Point, Wis.). In Sunday's game at Lewis University, the Wildcats held a 39-38 lead but were unable to hold on against the Flyers, falling 83-59. 

Lead the way:  Junior Darby Youngstrom (Cook, Minn./North Woods) leads the Wildcats with 14 points per game this year.  She is also the team leader with four assists and is second in rebounding.  Youngstrom is shooting at 50 percent and is a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.

Freshman point guards: Freshman Amber Huebner (Marquette, Mich.) and Elizabeth Lutz (Marshall, Wis.) are giving NMU 40 minutes a game of point guard play.  As a pair, the duo is averaging nine points a game, two assists and 2.5 steals per game.  Huebner is shooting 50% from the field this season while Lutz is making 75% from the free throw line. 

Dillinger's defense:  Junior Sydney Dillinger (Houghton, Mich.) leads the Wildcats with four steals on the season, including three in the opener against Indianapolis.  She is also second on the team in blocked shots. 

Getting rebounds:  Northern Michigan has grabbed 25 offensive rebounds to their opponents 11 this season.  Schultz paces the team with nine, while Youngstrom and sophomore Emma Benoit (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire) have both added three. 

NMU versus Concordia, St. Paul: NMU is 3-4 overall against the Golden Bears, dropping the past three contests. In last season's matchup, CSP took a 68-61 victory in Marquette, Michigan.  The Golden Bears enter the game at 1-1, falling to Pittsburgh State University 80-61, then defeating #3 Harding University 78-67 the following night. 

NMU versus Minnesota-Crookston:  The Wildcats hold a 2-0 advantage over the Golden Eagles all-time.  Last season Northern Michigan defeated Crookston 63-60, fueled by a 19-8 first quarter, and a 16-10 fourth quarter.  This season, the Golden Eagles have yet to play, and open their season against Michigan Technological University Friday evening. 

NMU versus Minnesota State-Moorhead: NMU has played the Dragons two times and have split the contests.  Their last matchup came during the 2014-15 season and the Wildcats won 49-45 in the Highway 65 Classic in Moorhead, Minnesota.  The Dragons open their season Thursday night against Michigan Tech.
