Budai Captures 100 Free as Men's Swim & Dive Finishes Second at the GLIAC Championship

CLEVELAND, OHIO -  The Northern Michigan University Men's Swim and Dive team captured one more individual championships as they finished second at the  Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship.

  GLIAC CHAMPION

Junior Lajos Budai (Kecskemet, Hungary) touched first for the 100-yard Freestyle with a time of 44.12 to give Budai his second GLIAC Championship title this week.

  100 FREE

Freshman Jon Busse (Stillwater, Minn.) finished ninth in the 100-yard Freestyle at 45.34. Junior Jonas Reinhold (Nienhagen, Germany) touched at 45.73 for 11th while freshman Henry Bauer (Howell, Mich.) touched at 46.30. Junior Maksim Kapustin (Minneapolis, Minn.) swam a 46.60 to gain points.

  THE MILE

Senior Janne Roovers (Khobar, Saudi Arabia) touched fifth with a time of 15:55.01 in the 1650-yard Freestyle. Senior Grantas Dapkus (Kaunas, Lithuania) finished at 15:55.27 to get sixth, and senior David Miranda (Vinaros, Spain) took 11th with a time of 16:06.37.

  FIVE OF THE TOP 16

The 200-yard Backstroke saw five Wildcats finish in the top 16 for points. Senior Renars Bundzis (Riga, Latvia) started the trend by finishing second with a time of 1:44.25. Senior Ryan Leonard (South Wales, Australia) took fourth, touching at 1:46.77 and senior Joshua Cosgrove (Bury, U.K.) placed sixth with a time of 1:47.55. Also gaining points for the team was senior Esteban Gutierrez (Chihuahua, Mexico) as he swam a 1:48.78 and freshman Sam Konigsberg (Ann Arbor, Mich.) finished at 1:51.76.

  200- YARD BREASTSTROKE

Senior Arnoldo Herrera (Heredia, Costa Rica) took sixth for the Wildcats in the 200-yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:01.18. Following was senior Benjamin Lindberg (Skelleftea, Sweden) in seventh, touching at 2:01.64 and freshman Lukas Bauer (Redwood City, Calif.) with a time of 2:03.12 to finish ninth.

  THE FINAL EVENT

The Wildcats finished their meet with a third place in the 400-yard Freestyle relay touching the wall at 3:00.41. The members included Busse, H. Bauer, Leonard, and Reinhold.

  TEAM RESULTS

The Wildcats finished second place in this year's Championship with 818 points, falling behind champion Grand Valley State University, who had 853 points. They defeated Wayne State University, who had 814.5 points. The also defeated three more teams.

The Wildcats will now prepare for the NCAA Championships, set to begin Tuesday, March 12 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
