Five B-Cuts Highlight First Day of Calvin Invite

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Swim & Dive teams finished Day One of the Calvin College Invitational Thursday night and came away with five NCAA B-cut times and a pool record.  The men's team is leading after the first day while the women's team is in second place.

  GETTING FIRST

The men's 800-yard Freestyle Relay set a new pool record as they took first place while achieving an NCAA B-cut time.  The team of junior Lajos Budai (Kecskemet, Hungary), freshman Jon Busse (Stillwater, Minn.), senior Grantas Dapkus (Kaunas, Lithuania) and junior Jonas Reinhold (Nienhagen, Germany) clocked in at 6:37.59. 

Budai split time of 1:39.34 also gave him an B-cut for the 200-yard Freestyle. 

  GETTING THE TIME

In addition to the achievements during the men's 800 Freestyle, four others achieved B-cuts on the night.  Dapkus posted a time of 16:04.43 in the 1,650-yard Freestyle to finish fourth while junior Janne Roovers (Khobar, Saudi Arabia) finished third and posted a qualifying time of 15:54.63.

In the women's 1,650 Freestyle, sophomore Gabriella Spajic (Sydney, Australia) qualified and took second with a time of 17:19.75.   

  TEAM SCORES

The men's team is leading the men's side of the event with 255 points and are ahead of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Grand Valley State University, who has 191 points. Six teams in total are part of the men's meet.

On the women's side, NMU is second with 173 points with eight teams total in the meet. 

  UP NEXT

The Wildcats return today as they are currently competing in preliminary races this morning.  The finals for Friday and Saturday night are slated to begin at 6 p.m. each night.
