Wildcats Defeat SCSU and Northern State for Second Straight Day

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- Northern Michigan University Women's Swim & Dive defeated St. Cloud State University and Northern State University in a double-dual meet while junior Rachel Helm (Newcastle, England/Burnside College) set a new PEIF Pool record in the 100-yard Backstroke.

  HELM SETS THE RECORD

In the seventh event of the day, Helm posted a time of 55.76 to break her own record. The junior has both the school and pool record in the 100-yard Backstroke as well as an NCAA National Championship to her name in the 100 back.

  WINNING A PAIR

Two sophomores both collected two victories. Lena Soulas (London, England/Woodhouse College) picked up victories in the 200-yard Freestyle (1:56.00) and the 100-yard Freestyle (52.68). Gabriella Spajic (Sydney, Australia/De La Salle Catholic College Cronulla) touched first in the 1,000-yard Freestyle with a time of 10:30.54. She then won the 500-yard Freestyle in 5:11.03.

  TAKING DIVES

Freshman Mary Grossman (Goshen, Ind./Northridge) swept the women's diving events. Grossman posted a score of 290.55 to win at the 3-meter Dive.  She then scored 252.30 to capture first place in the 1-meter Dive.

  INDIVIDUAL WINS

Senior Dana Stroven (Howell, Mich./Hartland) took victory in the 100-yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:08.42. Sophomore Katharina Springhetti (Tramin, Italy/WFO Auer) took first with a time of 2:25.09 in the 200-yard Breaststroke.

  OPENING STRONG

The first race of the day was the 400-yard Medley Relay, which the Wildcats won to start the day on top. The winning relay, consisting of senior Regan Kilburn (Muscatine, Iowa), Springhetti, Helm and Soulas won with a time of 3:54.63.

  TEAM SCORES

As a team, NMU picked up two victories since the meet resulted in a double-dual format.  The Wildcats defeated SCSU by a score of 173-122.  They also defeated Northern State with the final score of 197-92.  SCSU defeated Northern State 224-70.

The Wildcats will now take a break from competition as their next meet features two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes, Grand Valley State University and Saginaw Valley State University inside the PEIF Pool Saturday, November 3.
