Men and Women's Swim & Dive Defeats Findlay; Women Compete With DI BGSU

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio --  The men's team captured 14 of 16 events to defeat the University of Findlay in a dual meet while the women's team defeated Findlay but fell to Bowling Green State University in a double-dual meet.

 TEAM SCORES

On the men's side, NMU defeated Findlay 217-67.  The women's team defeated the Oilers 179.50-120.50.  The Division 1 BGSU squad swam past the Wildcats 192-108, while BGSU defeated UF 215-85.

  ALL SHE DOES IS WIN

Junior Rachel Helm (Newcastle, England/Burnside College) won three individual races and was a member of the winning 200-yard Medley Relay team.  She won the 100-yard backstroke by over a second, winning with a time of 56.04.

She then went on to win the 200-yard Backstroke by nearly eight seconds, touching in 1:59.73. In the 200-yard Individual Medley, Helm beat the field with a time of 2:07.06, winning the race by a second over the second-place BGSU swimmer.

Her times in the backstroke races also gave her NCAA B-Cut Qualifiers.

  200 MEDLEY RELAY SWEEP

Both the men's and the women's team won the 200-yard Medley Relay. The women's team of Regan Kilburn (Muscatine, Iowa), Helm, junior Madelyn Irelan (Owosso, Mich.) and sophomore Lena Soulas (London, England/Woodhouse College) won in 1:47.18. 

The men's team, with a time of 1:34.73, consisted of senior Renars Bundzis (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary School), senior Arnoldo Herrera (Heredia, Costa Rica/Saint Jude), Maks Kapustin (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley) and Lajos Budai (Kecskemet, Hungary/Bolyai Janos).

  THE MEN'S 400-YARD RELAY

The men's team finished the meet strong by winning the final race, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of freshman Jon Busse (Stillwater, Minn.), senior Joshua Cosgrove (Bury, U.K./Bury College), senior Ryan Leonard (South Wales, Australia/Toronto) and Budai won the race in 3:10.71.

  WINNING RACES

Three swimmers from the men's team also won two individual races.  

Herrera captured the 100-yard Breaststroke in 58.70 and the 200-yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:09.90.

Budai claim the 50-yard Freestyle and the 100-yard Freestyle. In the 50, Budai posted a time of 21.67 and followed it with a time of 47.64 in the 100.

Junior Jonas Reinhold (Nienhagen, Germany/Holty Gymnasium-Celle) took the 200-yard Butterfly in a time of 1:56.81 and then won the 500-yard Freestyle in 4:48.34.

  MORE WINS

The men's team also finished with swimmers who won a single race. Bundzis notched a time of 51.38 to win the 100-yard Backstroke while senior Janne Roovers (Khobar, Saudi Arabia/Dhahran) posted a winning time of 10:04.76 in the 1000-yard Freestyle.

Cosgrove captured the 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 52.57 while Leonard won the 200-yard Individual Medley in 1:59.06

  UP NEXT

The team returns to action and hosts their first two home meets of the season as they host St. Cloud State University and Northern State University on Friday night at 6 p.m. in the PEIF Pool. They then return Saturday to take on the same teams at 11 a.m.
