Swim & Dive Wins Mixed Meet at Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio – The Northern Michigan University Swim & Dive teams visited the University of Findlay for their first meet of the season and came away with a big win, winning by a score 3074.5 to 2513.5 in a meet that saw many mixed races.

 WINNING THE MEET

The Wildcats won 12 of the 16 races in the meet, winning the first three races. On the women's side, NMU outscored Findlay 1135.5 to 933.5. The men's team outscored the hosts 975 to 728.

  NCAA QUALIFYING DIVES

Freshman Mary Grossman (Goshen, Ind./Northridge) captured the women's 1-meter Dive with a score of 264.53, which was nearly 30 points higher than second place.  In her first meet as a Wildcat, her score gave her an NCAA Qualifier.

  CAPTURING THE INDIVIDUALS

Including victory in the 1-meter Dive, NMU captured first place in nearly all individual events. Junior Rachel Helm (Newcastle, England./Burnside College) captured her first individual victory of the season in the 100-yard Individual Medley in a time of 58.57.  Senior Ryan Leonard (South Wales, Australia/Toronto) took first in the men's 100-yard IM in 52.96. In the women's 3-meter Dive, senior Angela Probstfeld (White Lake, Mich/Lakeland) posted a score of 236.48 for her first diving win this season.

  THE SNAARF RACES

One unique feature of this meet was the men's and women's SNAARF races. This race three swimmers swam in the same lane and drafted off each other, similar to cycling. NMU claimed the women's race as senior Becca Arakelian (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Stevenson), sophomore Stefanie Rasmussen (Melrose, Minn./Melrose Area High School) and sophomore Gabriella Spajic (Sydney, Australia/De La Salle Catholic College Cronulla) timed in at 7:06.99. The men's race saw the NMU team of Jon Busse (Stillwater, Minn.), senior Janne Roovers (Khobar, Saudi Arabia/Dhahran) and junior Jonas Reinhold (Nienhagen, Germany/Holty Gymnasium-Celle) touch in a time of 6:27.18 to win.

  MIXED RACES

Another feature in this season-opening meet was the fact that most relays were mixed between the men's and women's teams. In the first race, the mixed 250-yard Medley Relay, senior Esteban Guttierez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colojio De Buchilleres SEA), senior Joshua Cosgrove (Bury, U.K./Bury College), Spajic and senior Dana Stroven (Howell, Mich./Hartland) won with a time of 2:09.29.

The team of Helm, sophomore Margaret Vaitkus (Munster, Ind.), sophomore Lena Soulas (London, England/Woodhouse College) and senior Regan Kilburn (Muscatine, Iowa) defeated five teams with a time of 3:08.22 to win the mixed 400-yard Freestyle Relay.

The third race, the mixed 300-yard Butterfly Relay saw Soulas, Leonard, Cosgrove and senior Carolina Artacho (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Paralelo) won by touching the wall at 2:45.69.
