Swimmers Compete at Open Water Championships

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Northern Michigan University Swim & Dive sent 10 swimmers to the Collegiate National Open Water Championships in Lawrence, Kansas.


 Sophomore Gabriella Spajic (Sydney, Australia/De La Salle Catholic College Cronulla) led the women's squad by finishing in 18th place with a time of 1:05:13.67.  Coming in 51st place overall was sophomore Katharina Springhetti (Tramin, Italy/Auerora Specialized Secondary School for Economic Field), who clocked in at 1:10:07.34.  Sophomore Cassandra Clark (Newport News, Va.) was the third NMU finisher and she posted a time of 1:14:00.48.  Senior Sara Foucault (Whitewater, Wis.) rounded out the NMU finishers with a time of 1:16:05.84.


 On the men's side, senior David Miranda (Vinaros, Spain/IES Jose Viloplane) led the team with a time of 1:02:10.43 to finish 18th overall. Senior Grantas Dapkus (Kaunas, Lithuania/Kaunas Saule), finishing in 1:03:05.79 took 21st.  Clocking in at 1:03:15.45 was Jonas Reinhold (Nienhagen, Germany/Holty Gymnasium-Celle) to finish 27th.

Senior Curran Moffitt (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) finishing 31st, timed at 1:03:21.95. Arnoldo Herrera (Heredia, Costa Rica/Saint Jude), with a 37th-place finish, finished with a time of 1:05:36.13.

Rounding out the finishers was sophomore Drew Del Papa (Warren, Mich./Oxford Virtual Academy) with a time of 1:08:39.83.


As a team, the men finished seventh overall out of 12 teams but were the top non-Division I squad in the race.

The women finished in 13th place out of 14, and finished third among Division II teams.


 The  Wildcats will travel to Findlay, Ohio for their first competitive meet of the season October 5 where they will take on Findlay University.  The next day, NMU will travel to Bowling Green State University to face Findlay and BGSU.
