MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University's Men's Swimming and Diving team scored a win during Saturday's meet against University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, defeating the Pointers 177-120.
The Wildcats won the 200-yard medley relay with a pool record time of 1:33.66. The team was composed of junior Renars Bundzis (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary School), junior Arnoldo Herrera (Heredia, Costa Rica/Saint Jude), senior Dan Szuba (White Lake, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central), and sophomore Lajos Budai (Kecskemet, Hungary/Bolyai Janos).
Junior diver Kyle Flickinger (Brimley, Mich./Sault Area) qualified for the NCAA pre-qualification meet on Saturday.
Herrera secured two first-place finishes, one in the 1000-yard freestyle, 10:09.60 and the other in the 100-yard breaststroke, 58.05.
Budai contributed two wins as well. He swam to victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.09. His time of 51.09 in the 100-yard butterfly gave him his second win.
Achieving another two wins for the Wildcats was junior Grantas Dapkus (Kaunas, Lithuania/Kaunas Saule). The first being in the 100-yard freestyle at 47.53. The second was in the 500-yard freestyle, timing in at 4:49.40.
Junior Esteban Gutierrez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colojio De Buchilleres SEA) took home a win in the 200-yard individual medley, clocking in at 1:58.21.
NMU continued to dominate the 200-yard races with wins by sophomore Jonas Reinhold (Neinhagen, Germany), junior Joshua Cosgrove (Bury, United Kingdom), and sophomore Sam Williams (Marquette, Mich.). Reinhold took first in the 200-yard butterfly, 1:56.15. Cosgrove touched first in the 200-yard backstroke, 1:52.92. Finally, Williams achieved a win in the 200-yard breaststroke, 2:11.17.
The individual wins were rounded out by junior Charles Pavlak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) who dove to victory in the three-meter dive with a score of 463.87.
The Wildcats return to the water on November 30, where they will compete against Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich.
