CABLE, Wis.—Northern Michigan University Nordic Skiing earned victories in both the men's and women's classic races Sunday at the Minnesota-Duluth CCSA race. Both teams won their respective races, while the Wildcats took the top individual spots as well.
In the women's 10-kilometer classic race, NMU finished with six individuals in the top-10 led by senior Vivian Hett (Burnsville, Minnesota). Hett defeated the field by over a minute, finishing with a time of 31 minutes, 50.20 seconds. Senior Kristen Bourne (Lake Elmo, Minnesota) was runner-up in the event, crossing the finish line in 33:23.30.
Also earning top-five finishes were freshman Julie Ensrud (Saltnes, Norway) and freshman Erin Moening (St. Paul, Minnesota) Ensrud placed fourth with a time of 34:07.90, while Moening was fifth finishing in 34:39.70.
Junior Sophie McDonald (Park City, Utah) was the fifth fastest Wildcats, placing eighth, while junior Sarah Bezdicek (Osseo, Minnesota) rounded out the top-10 finishers for NMU placing ninth. McDonald finished with a time of 35:02.10, Bezdicek crossed the finish line in 35:17.00.
The women took the top spot as a team with 50 points. They defeated five other programs with Michigan Technological University and the College of St. Scholastica rounding out the top-three teams.
Freshman Kjetil Baanerud (Oslo, Norway) took the top overall spot in the men's 15-kilometer classic race with a time of 41:15.60. Not far behind, sophomore Lars Soensterud (Oslo, Norway) finished in 41:26.50. The duo were two of four Wildcats to earn top-10 finishes on Sunday.
Also finishing in the top-10 were sophomore Mathias Aas-Rolid (Redalen, Norway) and junior Leo Hipp (Forest Lake, Minnesota) placing seventh and ninth, respectively. Aas-Rolid finished with a time of 42:47.80, while Hipp crossed the finish line in 43:12.60.
The men also took the top spot as a team with 29 points defeating MTU, CSS, and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
NMU will compete again next weekend when they compete at the MTU CCSA Race hosted by Michigan Tech. Classic style races will be held on Saturday with freestyle races on Sunday.
