MARQUETTE, Mich.— Northern Michigan University Men's Soccer was recognized by the United Soccer Coaches with the Team Academic Award for the 2016 season. The award is the first for the men's team, which had a team grade point average (GPA) of 3.05 in their first season of competition.
To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's GPA, then dividing by the number of players.
A total of 885 soccer teams (303 men, 552 women) from throughout the United States have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award for their performance in the classroom as a team during the 2016-17 academic year.
