Wildcats Hit the Road Looking for Revenge

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University Men's Soccer (4-9-1, 2-8 GLIAC) will hit the road for the final weekend of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with Friday's contest against Ashland University (6-7, 2-7 GLIAC) at 4:40 p.m. and Saturday's match against Tiffin University (6-5-3, 4-3-2 GLIAC) at noon.

Weekly Notes:

Split Weekend. An early goal by Davenport University in the opening ten minutes, proved to be the difference maker in NMU's 1-0 loss to the Panthers on Friday. The Wildcats rebounded with a 2-0 shutout of Purdue University-Northwest. Sophomore midfielder Nick Metcalfe (Royal Oak, Michigan) got his head on a corner kick to five NMU the lead in the first half. Sophomore defender Mirko Nufi (Crema, Italy) found the back of the net on a penalty kick later in the game to secure the win.

Ties for the team lead. Junior forward Sam Popp (Northville, Michigan) holds a share of the team lead in both goals and assists on the season. Freshman forward Birkir Baldursson (Kopavogur, Iceland) netted his third goal of 2017 two weekend ago to give him a share of the lead with Popp. Popp's sits tied for the team lead with three assists as both he and junior forward Nic Harenda (Waukesha, Wisconsin) have three on the year. The duo is currently tied for sixth most in the GLIAC.

Torelli's Season High. Sophomore goalkeeper Filippo Torelli (Parma, Italy) is among the best keepers in the conference with 37 saves and a goals-against-average of 1.35. He has the fourth most saves in the GLIAC, while his GAA is fifth-best. His 17 goals allowed this year is also fourth best in the league.

Poggi enters his second year. NMU Head Coach David Poggi is in his second season as the head coach of the Wildcats, producing a record of 9-19-3 overall.

NMU versus Ashland. The two teams played each other three times over the course of two seasons resulting in a 1-1-1 record for each program. Earlier this season, the Wildcats earned a 3-0 victory over the Eagles at home.

NMU versus Tiffin. The two teams played each other three times over the course of two seasons with NMU trailing in the series, 0-2-1. The Dragons came to Marquette, Michigan, earlier this season and earned a 1-0 victory over the Wildcats.
