MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan men's soccer team fell to Northwood, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the NMU Soccer Field.
Eric Suess's second goal of the season drew the Wildcats within one with five minutes remaining in regulation, but the Timberwolves held off their late rally to move into second place in the GLIAC standings.
After Suess's goal, a Northwood foul gave Northern Michigan a free kick in their offensive end. Sam Popp deflected the kick with his head on net, but Brendan Brown made the save.
Antonino Anselmi opened the scoring in the 23rd minute of the match, coming up with a corner kick in the top left corner of the box and finding the back of the net.
Connor Cole scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 56th minute, sending a shot off the crossbar and in after stealing the ball from a Wildcat defender.
The Wildcats return to action next weekend, hosting Ashland (Oct. 7, 3 p.m.) and Ohio Dominican (Oct. 9, 2 p.m.).
