MANKATO, Minn. – Three third period goals by Minnesota State-Mankato cost the Northern Michigan hockey team a WCHA contest at the Verizon Wireless Center, 3-0 Saturday.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 6-8-2 on the season with a 4-5-1 mark in WCHA action. Minnesota State-Mankato improved to 9-7-0 and 7-3-0 in league action.
The game was scoreless until 11:16 in the third period when MSU's Zach Lehrke scored a power play goal on a feed from JP Lafontaine and Zach Palmquist. Jordan Nelson scored just over a minute and a half later (12:57) to take a 2-0 lead for the Mavericks. Matt Leitner then scored an empty net goal at the 19:19 mark of the third to set the final tally.
MSU outshot Northern Michigan 49-17. Northern Michigan was called for 10 penalties for 31 minutes while the Mavericks were whistled for eight penalties for 16 minutes in the box.
Wade Epp led NMU with three shots in the contest while Bryce Gervais led MSU with six.
Freshman goalie Mathias Dahlstrom had a career-high 45 saves in net for the Wildcats.
Northern Michigan travels to face North Dakota Friday and Saturday (Dec. 13-14) in the squads final nonconference series.
