Wildcats Sweep Exhibition Weekend with 3-2 Win on Sunday

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team got a pair of third-period goals from junior forward Ryan Daugherty to defeat Laurentian University 3-2 on Sunday (Oct. 6) afternoon from the Berry Events Center. The visitors held a 2-0 lead before the Wildcats came back to sweep their weekend with two exhibition wins.

NMU defeated the US National Development Under-18 team 3-1 on Saturday (Oct. 5) at the Berry Events Center. The Wildcats begin the regular season next weekend (Oct. 11-12) in Madison, Wis. against the University of Wisconsin Badgers.

Down 2-1 entering the third period, Daugherty scored the game-tying goal halfway in (10:02) with a breakaway that he shelved over the Laurentian goaltender. Assisting on the goal was junior forward Ryan Kesti.

Forty-three seconds later, Daugherty again streaked up the ice and fired a shot into the back of the net as he was going one-on-one with a defender. Junior defenseman Jake Baker assisted on the shorthanded tally.

Laurentian scored two goals in the first period. Corey McEwen buried a goal 3:13 into the game with the assist going to Richard Therien.

Jordan Carroll added to the lead with an unassisted power-play tally 11:35 into the first.

Sophomore forward Ryan Aynsley brought NMU to within one (2-1) with 25 seconds left in the first period as he batted a puck into the back of the net after a shot by freshman defenseman Barrett Kaib bounced up in the air. The power-play goal was also assisted by freshman defenseman Brock Maschmeyer.

NMU outshot Laurentian 41-18. Sophomore goaltender Michael Doan had 11 saves in the first two periods. Redshirt freshman Mathias Dahlstrom stopped five shots in the third. Charlie Millen had 28 saves for Laurentian.

The two teams combined for 53 minutes of penalties. NMU was 1-for-9 on the man advantage and Laurentian was 1-for-6.
