MARQUETTE, Mich. – The No. 19-ranked Northern Michigan hockey team hits the road this weekend for the first of its two Central Collegiate Hockey Association road series in February. The Wildcats travel to Bowling Green State on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 10-11) for 7:05 p.m. game times from BGSU Ice Arena.
Coach Walt Kyle's team enters the weekend 12-10-6 overall and 7-9-6-3 in the conference for 30 points and ninth-place. The 'Cats are ranked No. 19 in this week's United State Hockey Online top 20 poll.
Bowling Green is 9-16-5 overall and 4-14-4-3 in the CCHA for 19 points. The Falcons are in 11th-place in the league and are coming off two weekend splits against Western Michigan and Notre Dame. Ryan Carpenter (8-11-19) and Camden Wojtala (7-10-17) lead the team in scoring while Andrew Hammond (2.58 goals against average, 89.8 save percentage) is 9-15-5 between the pipes.
Northern trails in the all-time series with Bowling Green 34-37-8 and is 12-21-3 in Ohio. NMU is 5-3-2 in the last 10 meetings and was 3-3-1 against the Falcons last season. The last meeting was in the best-of-three, first round of the CCHA tournament from the Berry Events Center. The 'Cats won the first game 6-3 on Friday (March 4). Saturday (March 5), the Falcons squeaked out a 2-0 victory. In the third game of the series, BGSU scored early in the second overtime to advance with a 2-1 victory.
Senior forwards Tyler Gron and Justin Florek lead the team in goals with 14. Gron has 18 assists on the season, while Florek has 10. Gron is also second overall in the CCHA in scoring.
Senior forward Andrew Cherniwchan has four goals and three assists in 13 games against the Falcons. Florek has three goals and six assists. Gron has four goals and three assists while sophomore forward Stephan Viger has two goals.
NMU is 4-8-1 on the road this season and 2-7-1 on the road in CCHA play. Wins came at Wisconsin, Lake Superior, Michigan Tech and Miami. The 'Cats are being outscored 43-29. Seven of Florek's goals are on the road while Vigier has six goals.
