MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Men's Golf team for Northern Michigan University opened up their spring season in California with Monterey Peninsula College.
On Wednesday, the team played the Blackhorse Golf Course in a qualifying round for Friday's match play. Junior Martin Eliasson (Sweden/Bildningscentrum Facetten) led the Wildcats with a 73, with sophomore Chris Black (Lisburn, Northern Ireland/Friends School) following with a 76. Junior Owen Beyer (DeWitt, Mich.) and sophomore Kurtis Fontinha (Penticton, B.C./Penticon Secondary School) both finished the round with a score of 83. Junior Logan Haight (Ostego, Mich.) rounded out the Wildcats' first day with an 88.
At the Nicklaus Club on Friday, NMU played MPC in a match-play format. Eliasson won his match 6 and 4, while Fontina saw victory, 2 and 1. Beyer tied his match. Black fell 3 and 2 while Haight dropped his match 2 and 1.
The men's team returns to the golf course Monday, March 26 and Tuesday, March 27 at the Big Blue Golf Club in Lexington, Kentucky for the GLIAC South Invitational.
