BROOKFIELD, Ill. — Junior Jake Mayon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) and sophomore punter John Kwiecinski (Plymouth, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary's) received 2017 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-Super Region Three honors.
Mayon's recognition on the Second Team Offense continues his 2017 season accolades as he was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Back of the Year and was named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association All-Midwest Region Football Second Team. He led the league with 1,377 yards, averaging 137.7 yards per game on 211 carries. Scoring eight touchdowns on the year, Mayon posted more than 200 yards rushing on four occasions and had six games with over 100 yards. Against Michigan Technological University, Mayon completed the only passing attempt of his career for a 30-yard touchdown.
Kwiecinski was named to the Third Team Defense as the team's punter. For the season, Kwiecinski earned GLIAC first-team honors by pacing the GLIAC with a 41.0 yards per punt average. A season long of 65 yards, he placed 15 punts inside the 20-yard line while only three punts ended in touchbacks throughout the entire season.
The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen's Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.
